Education

The three stages of creosote.

Almost every chimney fire we respond to starts with Stage 3 creosote — a glassy, tar-like glaze that builds up when annual maintenance gets skipped. Knowing the stages tells you what kind of service your chimney actually needs.

Stage 1

Light, Flaky Dust

How it forms

Forms during normal wood-burning when smoke condenses on cool flue walls. Looks like soft, dark dust or soot.

How we remove it

Standard chimney sweep removes it completely with brushes and HEPA vacuum. 60–90 minutes per visit.

The rule of thumb

NFPA 211 says sweep when creosote reaches 1/8" thick — that's typically annually for wood-burning fireplaces in DFW. Skip a year and you risk advancing from Stage 1 to Stage 2. Skip multiple years and Stage 3 starts forming.
